Group Therapy & Support Group
For Individuals living with Chronic Pain and/or Chronic Illness
Living with chronic pain or illness can feel isolating and overwhelming. Research shows that peer support and guided therapeutic interventions improve coping, reduce stress, and enhance quality of life.
We have created two different group programs that can help individuals build resilience and self-awareness as well as reduce isolation through community support.
Tender Support Group
This is a space specifically created for individuals navigating the challenges of chronic pain and chronic illness.
This support group aims to create a nurturing environment where participants can share their experiences, gain insights, and support one another on the path to healing.
Chronic pain and chronic illness can manifest in various ways, and this group is a safe space to explore these complexities without judgment.
This support group is FREE. If you wish to contribute, we accept donations to our Sliding Scale Program.
Our support group is held every 3 months. Follow us on our socials or WhatsApp broadcast channels for updates.

Frequently Asked Questions
-

People open to learning from others and willing to participate in group discussions at their comfort level.
-
Individuals in crisis or requiring immediate medical or psychiatric intervention (they should seek one-on-one professional care first).
People who are unwilling to respect confidentiality, or who may be disruptive or unsafe to others in a shared group setting.
Individuals expecting personalised therapy or diagnosis, as support groups focus on shared experiences and peer learning rather than individualised treatment
-
Please complete a short intake form prior to joining. This helps us understand your needs and ensures the group is a safe and supportive space for everyone. The form also lets us know if individual counselling might be a better fit before joining a group.
This group is a safe, non-judgmental space for sharing, listening, and connecting. The intake form helps us ensure the timing is right for you to join.

Although they may look similar from the outside, group therapy and a support group serve different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you decide what kind of space feels right for you.
Group therapy is a structured, therapist-led clinical intervention and follows a therapeutic framework. Sessions are intentional, progressive, and designed to create measurable emotional and behavioural shifts.
Group Therapy for Chronic Pain and/or Chronic Illness
Living with chronic pain or illness can feel isolating, confusing, and exhausting. This small, therapist-led group offers a safe and structured space to explore the connection between pain, emotions, and the nervous system, alongside others who are navigating a similar journey as you.
Why Group Work?
Research consistently shows that shared therapeutic spaces can reduce isolation, regulate the nervous system, and support long-term change.
In a small group setting (maximum 5 participants), you will:
Learn why symptoms flare during stress or emotional overwhelm and how to work with the body that doesn’t feel disempowering
Explore the role of trauma and unprocessed emotions
Develop practical regulation tools and expand your personal resource toolkit
Build self-compassion and resilience
Be witness in your journey and feel less alone in your experience
This group complements individual therapy and, for some, can gently support the transition away from 1:1 sessions.
Topics for Group Therapy
Session 1: Safety & Foundations
Establishing group agreements, understanding chronic pain through a nervous system lens, and building a supportive container.
Session 2: Understanding Pain & the Nervous System
How fight, flight, freeze, and shutdown responses influence symptoms, and how to begin regulating them.
Session 3: Building Emotional Awareness and Capacity
Exploring grief, frustration, fear, and identity shifts that often accompany long-term illness.
Session 4: Exploring Coping Patterns
Understanding patterns like over-functioning, pushing through, avoidance, or self-criticism, and building adaptive alternatives.

To get the most from the 6-session Chronic Pain & Chronic Illness Group Therapy, we recommend preparing in the following ways:
Reflect on Your Goals: Consider what you hope to achieve through the group, whether it’s reducing isolation, learning coping strategies, or increasing body awareness.
Assess Readiness: Ensure you feel emotionally ready to participate in a therapist-led, structured group. If you’re in crisis or need urgent support, please seek individual care first.
Check Commitments: Plan your schedule so you can attend all six sessions consistently, as continuity supports therapeutic progress.
Please complete a Group Therapy Screening Form prior to joining as this is a closed group intervention. This helps us understand your needs and ensures the group is a safe and supportive space for everyone. The form also lets us know if individual counselling might be a better fit before joining a group.

Although they may look similar from the outside, group therapy and a support group serve different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you decide what kind of space feels right for you.
Group therapy is a structured, therapist-led clinical intervention that follows a therapeutic framework. Sessions are intentional, progressive, and designed to create measurable emotional and behavioural shifts.
In group therapy:
A licensed or trained therapist guides the process
There is psychoeducation (e.g. nervous system, trauma, emotions)
Specific therapeutic interventions are used (somatic work, emotion processing, cognitive work)
Group dynamics are actively facilitated
Ruptures, conflict, and relational patterns are explored safely
There are clear goals and outcomes
Group therapy is not just about sharing stories or the journey but it is about working with them in real time. For chronic pain and illness, this might include understanding how the nervous system influences symptoms, processing grief or anger safely, and learning regulation tools that reduce flare intensity.
In comparison, a support group is typically peer-led or loosely facilitated. The primary focus is shared experience and emotional validation.
In a support group:
Members share their stories and challenges
The structure is often informal
Advice and coping strategies are shared among peers
There is less clinical intervention or goal setting
While support groups are helpful for normalising experience and building solidarity, they do not typically provide structured therapeutic interventions with specific clinical outcomes.
-
To ensure a consistent and supportive group environment, participants are asked to enroll and pay for all six sessions upfront.
This allows everyone to fully engage, build trust within the group, and gain the maximum benefit from the progressive therapeutic experience.
